Foreign nationals who wish to live and work in South Africa, must first apply for an appropriate work visa.
There are four South African work visas available at the moment, each with its own criteria and allowances. Here is a quick look at all four:
Critical skills work visa
The South African critical skills visa is based on a list of critical skills needed in South Africa. The main criteria for the visa is that the applicant’s occupation appears on the critical skills list. No job offer is needed to apply for the critical skills work visa.
General work visa
This visa is an option if a foreign national do not qualify for another type of work visa. It is important to note that a job offer is needed to be able to apply for this visa. Further to this, the employer must be able to prove that they could not find a South African citizen or permanent resident to fill the position the foreigner is applying for.
Individual corporate workers visa
Individual corporate workers visas are used where South African companies have corporate visas. The corporate visa is applied for first by the employer and then the foreign national apply for the individual corporate workers visa.
Intra-company transfer work visa
Multi-national companies who wish to transfer international staff to a branch, subsidiary or affiliate in South Africa, needs an intra-company transfer work visa to do so. This is a temporary visa only, valid for up to 4 years.
